How to Identify a Genuine Handloom Chanderi Saree

Chanderi sarees are among the most counterfeited handloom fabrics in India. Knowing how to tell the difference protects you from paying handloom prices for machine-made fabric.

1. Look for the Handloom Mark and Silk Mark

The most reliable verification is the Handloom Mark — a government certification by the Ministry of Textiles that guarantees the saree is handwoven. For pure silk Chanderi sarees, additionally look for the Silk Mark, certifying genuine silk (not synthetic). Both marks should appear on a tag attached to the saree.

2. Check the Weave Under Light

Hold the saree up against natural light. A genuine Chanderi Tissue saree will be translucent — you should see your hand through the fabric. The weave will appear slightly irregular under close inspection. Power-loom sarees have a perfectly uniform machine-made pattern with no such variation.

3. Examine the Selvedge (Kinara)

The selvedge — the finished edge running along the length of the saree — is a reliable indicator. In a genuine handloom Chanderi, the selvedge is slightly uneven with a natural texture. Machine-made sarees have a perfectly straight, machine-finished selvedge.

4. Look for Traditional Chanderi Motifs

Authentic Chanderi sarees carry traditional motifs — most commonly the Ashrafi (gold coin) butti, dandiyal border, and small floral or geometric buttis woven directly into the fabric. These motifs should feel slightly raised when you run your finger over them. In power-loom copies, printed motifs feel flat and uniform.

5. Check the Price

A genuine Chanderi Tissue or Pattu silk saree requires 3 to 7 days of weaving on a traditional pit loom. A genuine piece will typically be priced upwards of ₹8,000. If you are being offered a 'Chanderi silk saree' for ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, it is almost certainly not genuine handloom silk.
